Non lucrative visa to Spain

All nationals from non-EU countries that wish to reside in Spain without carrying out any labour activity must request a permit and a visa for non-lucrative residence.

This type of visa is intended for foreign citizens who have the necessary economic means to live in Spain without carrying out labor activity.

Consequently, the non lucrative visa is suitable for citizens with a stable passive income it means for those whom are engaged in work activities that do not require a permanent presence at the workplace.

According to the spanish law, a foreign citizen who has received a residence permit in Spain is required to stay in the country most of the year, in other case you can loss your NLV permition at the time of renewal of your residence.

One of the significant advantages of NLV is the ability to reside in Spain, both its owner and his family members. Moreover, the “owner” of NLV will be able to obtain the right to work after the extension of the first existing residence.

• gives the right to free movement through the territory of 27 countries which are members of the Schengen Agreement (on tourist terms)
• gives the right to obtain the spanish citizenship for the owner of NLV and members of his family
• gives the possibility of obtaining a residence permit and the spanish citizenship for the children who will be born in Spain in an accelerated time and in a simplified form.

Requirements for obtaining a non-lucrative residence

The main requirement for obtaining the non-lucrative residence is the ability to prove sufficient passive income and officially received economic funds. To date, they amount to 25 560 euros per year for the applicant and 6.390 euros per year for each additional family member.
The second fundamental requirement is you have to live in Spain at least six months a year.

The procedure for obtaining a non-lucrative residence

The visa request is submitted personally by the applicant at the consulate of Spain in the country of residence.
First of all, the applicant should be legally in Spain and should not violate the obligation to return to Spain in case of voluntary return to the country of origin.

• the period of consideration of the application is from 1 to 3 months
• initially, a non-lucrative residence is issued for a period of 1 year
• further extension is possible if the “owner” of NLV has lived in Spain for at least 6 months
• subsequently, a non-lucrative residence is issued for 2 years.

The process of obtaining a non-lucrative residence

The process of obtaining a non-lucrative residence consists of two stages:

• the first step is to obtain a visa D in the country of which you are citizen
• the second step is to obtain a residence permit in Spain

First of all, you have present a package of documents for obtaining a visa for residence in the Consulate of the country of origin or legal residence of the applicant are submitted. You will receive a “D” visa after delivery of all documents and the period of expectation is from 1 to 3 months. This visa is stamped in the passport. Its validity is up to three months.

The visa “D” gives you the right to obtain a residence permit without the right to work for a period of one year. Having obtained a visa and having entrained in Spain, you must apply for receiving a plastic card at the police for foreigners. Its receipt is made at the place of residence.

Having applied and fingerprinting, you will receive a plastic card – residence permit during more o less 30 days. Your new address, last name, first name and expiration date of the residence permit will be indicated on the resident card.
